WHAT WILL CHANGE AFTER ELECTIONS

What will change after elections depends on what will happen in the elections. Will a party emerge with a decisive majority? Will there be hung parliament? Will NDA come back to power? My prediction is BJP and its supporters will manage 260 seats. Congress and its supporters will reach a tally of 250. No group will get a majority. There will be a group of about 40 MPs who want a non-BJP-non-Congress government. The process of government formation will be messy. Ultimately to get rid of the stalemate the group of 40 will adjust themselves on one side or the other. A government will finally come to power.
Which side will be better for the economy? The answer will be that both sides will be equally good or bad. Will there be a right of center government? The answer is no. When BJP came to power in 2014 everyone expected that there will emerge a right of center government. But nothing like that materialized. In India with about 70% of the population being poor there can only be a left of center government. Both Congress and BJP will ultimately gravitate to the same kind of economic policies. It matters little to the economy whether Congress or BJP comes to power.
The real difference will be on the political side. Will there be more of the Hindutva rhetoric? Will there be more cow politics? Are more people going to be branded as anti-national? Will there be more press muzzling? Will issues such as love-jihad and moral policing hold sway? What will be role of Hindi in education and administration? Will secularism be a matter of debate and discussion? How will the central government view the issue of constructing Ram temple? These are the issues that will be decided by the outcome of elections. Which party comes to power matters little for economic and foreign policy formation.
